Milapfest Dance Fellowships

Dear Dance-India Participants

We know you have been waiting very eagerly for this year’s Fellowship announcement. After much deliberation we have made our decision after receiving many excellent applications from very deserving participants, which made the process somewhat difficult. As we have limited fellowships we understand that some of you may be disappointed. But we do hope that you will apply again in future so that you can avail of this fine opportunity for your training and development.

Kiran Ratna, who is an established teacher of Bharatnatyam in Wales, and has worked with great distinction in teaching, performing & choreography, with some excellent touring productions for many years, has been chosen to receive a new Distinguished Teachers Award for her life time work  in establishing & popularizing Indian Dance in Wales & beyond. This award specially established in Milapfest's 25th Anniversary year, will be awarded in future years from time to time to Distinguished Teachers of Indian Dance in Britain.. The award carries a citation as well as funds to enable the recipient to travel to widen her knowledge & skills. Our hearty congratulations to Kiran Ratna on this special occasion.

One of the best things an aspiring young dancer can hope for, is to go out and learn the intricacies of a particular dance style from a wonderful and inspiring GURU.

This 'Finishing School' style of learning is by and large not possible outside of India in sustained manner - established dancers and teachers who wish to hone their teaching, choreographic or abinays skills often have to make their own arrangements to do so.

Each Year Milapfest awards four annual dance fellowships, three for dance students, and one for an established dancer teacher in Britain. These prestigious fellowships will be awarded to deserving candidates from amongst those attending DANCE-INDIA on the basis of recommendations given by Dance-India faculty and Gurus. The Milapfest Dance Fellowship will enable the successful candidate to travel to learn from an established Guru.

In 2009, Milapfest established a very special new scholarship to study at the famed Kalakshethra School at Chennai. This year long scholarship is for an advanced & committed Bharatnatyam student/teacher from Europe, wanting to pursue a full year's study at Kalakshethra. The scholarship is towards payment of all the fees and a small additional sum for boarding and lodging. The scholarship is awarded in consultation with Leela Samson, the Director of Kalakshethra and is usually reserved for someone who has attended Dance India. This prestigious & precious scholarship was awarded to Arianna Baalabio on 2009.

For further information please contact Archana Shastri at Milapfest on 0151 291 3949.

"DANCE-INDIA has been an extremely valuble experience for me. Over the short period of intensive tranning. I have noticed a huge improvement in my dance technique and interpretation. The close contact with gurus of such high calibre has truly inspired me to push myself closer and closer to the standards that they set. The creative environment has allowed me to challenge myself while still being a thoroughly enjoyable experience."

Hiten Mistry :

The Milapfest Dance Fellowship has helped me to purse further advanced training in Bharatanatyam from the Dhananjayans in Chennai, India. This is something I have always dreamed of! As a result of the traning and guidance from the Dhananjayans, I am able to polish my dance to the highest standards. I have also had opportunity to learn Nattuvangam and Carnatic Music from Bhagavatulu Seetarama Sharma. These are the moments that I will always cherish, thanks to DANCE-INDIA and Milapfest for providing me such fantasic opportunity and helping me shape my career as professional dancer!

Nikita Thankar:

I have just got back form my adventrures in India, the land of spirituality, values and contradiction. The aim of this trip was to take time out from my routine (teaching and performing). I felt a trip to India to spend time with my self and dancing inorder. It was a pleasant suprise when I was awarded a scholorship by Milapfest to train with a Guru of my choice. I'd like to thank Milapfest for their faith in awarding me a teacher training dance fellowship. Without this I may never have got the courage to leave my company and go to India for those months. It is thanks to this oppurtunity I was able to develop myself as a dancer and teacher and in many other ways.

Divya Kasturi:

In 2008, I attended DANCE-INDIA, the summer school by Milapfest for the first time. For me the whole experience was reminiscent of a traditional Indian 'gurukula' system of learning. The day long sessions of eventful learning, joyous interactions with ace artistes, inspiring evening performances and not to mention the sumptuous food.. are still fresh in my memory. With the Milapfest Dance Fellowship I spent five weeks learning from Kumudini Lakhia in New Delhi. I was also lucky enough to attend the 'Kathak Mahotsav 2009' giving me great insight into the current scenario of Kathak in India. I would not have gained these rich invaluable experiences if not for Milapfest's encoragement by way of choosing me for the Fellowship.

To receive this scholarship it’s a blessing I will never forget in my life, for my development both as a Bharatanatyam dancer and as a person.I have been to Chennai to train many times (each time just for a few months) and every time I was coming back a piece of my heart didn’t want me to leave. To have now the possibility to be there, in Kalakshetra, for one year (after having known Leela akka’s wonderful teaching and thinking in Dance India Summer School) it will be a dream coming true. It will give me the possibility to explore more and more deeply the dance form that I have chosen as my path and to share all this with many others. I will always be grateful to life and to Milap for that!

I hope to make the most of the expert and inspirational teaching of Madhavi Mudgal and return energised; with a clearer, deeper knowledge of Odissi as an artform.

I don’t really have any words to express the emotions I felt upon knowing that I had been offered the Milapfest Dance Fellowship. This has been a splendid opportunity to learn advanced dance, evident from the previous fellows’ experiences in the past years. Many thanks to Milapfest for facilitating training amongst students and teachers alike- I would like to utilize this travelling fellowship to learn the nuances of Bharathanatyam from the Dhananjayans which I hope would enhance my own as well as my student’s learning experience
